Something I miss about writing fanfiction is that whenever I traveled, I could say where I'd be, and people who liked my writing would clamor to meet up, often travelilng some distance themselves. I never liked it when people would treat me like a rock star instead of a friend, but I miss being a part of a subculture where meetups were practically mandatory when visiting new places. From this you can infer that if I ever mention that I'm coming to a place you either live or would also like to visit, I would be happy to meet you if you are interested.
I know we haven't talked too much, but I would be up for a meetup if you do come to Baltimore. I live in northern Delaware, which is about an hour and a half away. Couldn't give you many suggestions about what to do there - Philadelphia is my city, not Baltimore - but at the very least we could go to the Inner Harbor and see the aquarium and such. Even if you're just in DC, I could come down there and we could hang out for an afternoon, or whatever you'd like.
I think online meetups are tons of fun, and I'm usually willing to drive a couple of hours to meet some interesting people. It's funny to me that GoS is a pretty tight-knit community, but meetups don't seem to happen very often. I wonder why that is. In my other online activities, meetups are encouraged when someone is traveling. I've met plenty of people through a sci-fi forum I used to go to - some in Baltimore, DC and New York, but mostly in Philadelphia. I met my current boyfriend at one of the Philly ones, and that's part of why I've become such a fan of meeting online friends. They're usually pretty cool in person.
